This version will run on up to 100 machines for 3 weeks unless installed over an existing serialized version of SnapMail. Please see Upgrading Your Snap Mail below, if applicable.
A gateway to QuickMail, Microsoft Mail (Macintosh server only), First Class, Nova Link and the Internet via UUCP or SMTP is available from Information Access Technologies. Please contact them and ask about Hologate and Holodemo (a turnkey one month UUCP trial account). Contact Information Access Technologies at hologate-sales@iat.com or (510) 704-0160 FAX (510) 704-8019.
1) Quit all applications and turn off any anti-virus software you are running.
2) Double-click on the “Installer” icon, located inside the Snap Mail folder.
3) Click on the “Install” button in the window that appears.
Your Macintosh will be restarted at the end of the installation and Snap Mail will be up and running!
• To install Snap Mail from a network file server:
(You may need to do this for some PowerBooks that do not have floppy drives, or if part of your network is connected remotely.)
First copy the Snap Mail folder onto your file server by dragging it's icon onto the file server's icon. This should create a folder on your file server called "Snap Mail". NOTE: Do not drag the files individually.
You can then install Snap Mail onto any Macintosh that has access to your file server by following these steps:
1) Use the chooser to mount the file server volume on which the Snap Mail folder was copied as explained above.
2) Quit all applications and turn off any anti-virus software you are running.
3) Open the "Snap Mail" folder on the file server volume.
4) Double click on the "Installer" icon.
5) Click on the “Install” button in the window that appears.
Your Macintosh will be restarted at the end of the installation and Snap Mail will be up and running!
1) From the "Files" Folder inside the "Snap Mail" folder: Drag the "Snap Mail Extension" file into your System Folder.
2) From the "System 6 Files" folder Install the “Snap Mail DA” file into your system using the Font/DA Mover program.
3) Drag the "Snap Mail Help" file (loose in the "Snap Mail" folder) into your System Folder.
4) Reboot your Macintosh.
• System 7 & 8 manual installation:
1) Close all currently running applications.
2) Drag all the files from the "Files" Folder of the "Snap Mail" folder onto the icon of your closed System Folder. A dialog box will appear asking if you want to “...put these items in special places inside the System Folder...” Click on the “OK” button.
NOTE: You must drag these items onto the icon for the System Folder, not into the opened System Folder window.
4) Drag the Snap Mail Help file onto the icon of your closed System Folder.
5) For PowerMac users: Drag the DA from the "Power Mac Files" folder and drop it on the icon of your closed System Folder.
6) Reboot your Macintosh.
===================== Upgrading Your Snap Mail =====================
Running the 'Easy Install' of this Demo on a machine that has a serialized copy of SnapMail will automatically maintain serialization. If you run a Custom Install option, or do not have a copy of SnapMail running on the machine, you will have a 21 day trial version which will expire 21 days after installation.
Snap Mail 2.0.3 will automatically see all mail from previous mailboxes. This will include the text of old mail, icons/forms and passwords. This happens at startup time when there is an existing Snap Mail Mailbox from a previous version.
Due to a number of enhancements made to the new version, Snap Mail 2.0.x will not work with previous versions of Snap Mail (v1.0 or v1.0.1). This means that users running Snap Mail 2.0 and above will NOT see users running previous versions and will therefore not be able to send and receive mail with those users running version 1.0 or 1.0.1. Snap Mail 2.0.3 users will also only be able to see people running Snap Mail version 2.0 or later in their recipients list.
===================== Adding new Users =====================
When adding new users it is recommended that all machines that currently have Snap Mail installed are running. This will avoid ID conflicts.
• On large networks with hundreds of zones the initial lookup could take an hour, from then on lookups should take less than a minute.
• Suitcase: Old versions of Suitcase will cause an error alert to appear at start-up time that proclaims an unexpected error -109. Upgrading to Suitcase II version 2.1.2 or later fixes this problem. We will address this issue in the next release.
• Escapade: Old versions of Escapade can cause a crash when opening a log item in the Delivered Mail Log. Upgrading to version 1.3.2 or later fixes this problem.
• Retrospect Remote: If Retrospect is set to intercept shutdown for a late night backup Snap Mail will not get a chance to dump any pending mail to a server until AFTER the backup, when the shutdown procedure completes. If this is a problem for you, you should turn on the "Send all mail directly to server" preference.
====================== Changes Since Version 1.0.1 ======================
Snap Mail 2.0.x New Features
• New Look: The software has been spiffed up and takes advantage of color if available.
• Mail Folders: You are now able to store mail in separate folders, which makes organizing and holding on to old mail much easier. Also, arriving return receipts and mail that you send to your self can both be set to automatically arrive in their own special folders.
• Snap Mail 2.0.x servers automatically forward users to everyone. This makes it much easier to get transient ARA users added to everyone's user listing.
• Message Sorting: You can now view messages in a folder not just in order of delivery date, but also by sender, type, icon, subject, and status (see below).
• Message Status: A mail item's status can now be set by the user. In 1.0.x a message's status was either read or unread, but now you can set the status to a number of states to help you organize your mail. Also, messages that have been replied to or forwarded are indicated as such.
• Find: There is now a find function that allows you to search through all your mail (either the entire text of the mail, or just the subject line).
• Services: Snap mail now has the built-in infrastructure for external services. This means that a Snap Mail LAN can be connected with any number of external communications mechanisms, for example and internet gateway, a FAX server, a pager gateway, etc. Currently Snap Mail will integrate with the Hologate suite of gateways (which include connectivity to UUCP hosts, SMPT servers, Quick Mail, Microsoft Mail, First Class, Nova Link, and more to come) made by Information Access Technologies. We will also be releasing a Snap Mail to Snap Mail gateway called Snap Remote that uses the external services infrastructure to connect Snap Mail LANs via a modem (Snap Remote). We are also actively looking for other companies to work with, and hope to offer a pager and a fax gateway soon.
The new address book window, and the addressing pop-up on the front page have been added to handle addressing mail to external destinations. See below for details.
• Address Book: The list of addresses on the front page is now customizable, in that you can remove names from it that you don't want to see (for example a server computer or people in another zone that you never talk to), and you can set nicknames for each user. In addition, if external services have been registered, you can add new external addresses to your address book so as not to have to type addresses in each time.
• Hide Server Preference: Snap Mail servers can be set to automatically hide themselves so that they won't clutter up the main address list.
• Addressing Pop-Up: A new pop-up has been added to the front window through which you can open the Address Book window. It also shows the addresses that you have added to the recipient list.
• Capture Address: if you have selected a message in your InBox that is from an external address, the "Capture Icons" item in the menu changes to "Capture Address." Selecting it creates a new entry in your address book with the given name and adds it to your quick list.
•Enclosures: You can now enclose folders as well as files, and the interface for doing so has been greatly improved. Also, when you select an enclosed file from the enclosure pop-pup, a window appears that shows information about the file and allows you to remove it from the enclosures list.
• To/cc/bcc Pop-Up: This new pop-up allows you to tag recipients of a message differently.
• Re-sizing: The main window is now re-sizable, and the divider between the InBox and OutBox can be positioned too. The zoom-box has also been implemented.
• Mail Reader Window: The mail reader window is now officially defunct.
• Full text log & More: The log now stores the full text of each mail item, and the number of items to be stored is user settable up to a maximum of 500. You can also now Print and Save log items.
• Changeable Font: The font and size of message text is now settable from a new "Text Format" preference section in the preferences window.
• Reply To Entire Recipient List: There is a new preference in the "Interface" portion of the preferences window which when activated, causes all of the original recipients of a message to be selected automatically on reply. This preference can be toggled by holding down the shift key.
• Capture Icon From Screen: A "Capture" button has been added to the Icons & Forms windows, which allows you to create new icons by "grabbing" it from anywhere on the screen.
• Return Receipt Forcing: There is now a pop-up in the Icons & Forms window that allows you to make particular icons "Force" return receipts on or off. To override forcing, use option-"send".
• Cancel Keyboard Equivalents: All modal dialogs now have the standard keyboard equivalents for cancel (cmd-. & ESC)
• The Snap Mail DA is Power Mac Native.
• The "Restore ID" window that appears after throwing out one's mailbox, now has a Cancel button.
• Server computers now propagate the destination list and thereby solve the problem where users of ARA had to call each other directly to get their ID's.
• There is a new server preference that allows you to automatically "Hide" a server. This is useful if you don't want folks to be sending a mail to a mac that you have decided to use only as a server.
• Now takes advantage of Mac speech synthesis technology (Press Cmd-= to read selected mail items).
• File selection boxes now remember the folder where they last were used and open there automatically.
• Saving mail items and log items automatically chooses the last file selected and also allows you to append mail to an existing file if you want.
• Highlight color is now the standard user defined highlight color from the "Color" control panel instead of black.
• Extract button now highlights in red to make it more noticeable.
• Undo has been implemented for all text boxes in Snap Mail.
• Keyboard extending of the selection range in text has been implemented. (Hold down the
shift key while using the arrows).
• You can now enclose files by dragging them directly from the finder onto the Snap Mail window.
• "Self-send" mail can be preferenced to include enclosures. See the "Mail" preference setting.
• Received mail is now stored as separate files in the folder "In" in your "Snap Mail 2.0 Files" folder.
• From the addressbook, you can easily change the address method "to,cc & bcc" of individual addresses by highlighting one or more addresses and clicking on "to", "cc", or "bcc".
• Balloon help has been added for all new features.
